A who's who of leftist activists and dark money groups wrote a letter attempting to mean-girl brands into boycotting advertising on Twitter. Boycott, or else. They're all angry about Elon Musk buying the bird app and there being a single social media platform the ultra-radical progressives don't control information on. Musk called them out twice by name. Turns out, according to the Washington Free Beacon, one of the companies doesn't actually exist. Well, kinda doesn't exist. It might "exist" by Washington DC standards
One of the top three signatories to the initial letter was a shadowy dark money group called "Accountable Tech." Daily Mail said they were formed by Nicole Gill, a political campaigner, and Jesse Lehrich, a former foreign policy spokesman for Hillary Clinton and the nephew of David Axelrod. As a 501(c)(4), they don't have to disclose their donor list. This is where Free Beacon's shoe-leather reporting comes in.
"In May, a group called Accountable Tech, which calls itself a “small nonprofit taking on Big Tech companies,” organized a corporate boycott to protest Elon Musk’s bid to buy Twitter [...] [it's a] registered trade name for the North Fund, a shape-shifting nonprofit group that uses aliases to push an array of left-wing causes from a shell office in Washington, D.C., according to corporate records."
Elon Musk wants answers.
It's an excellent question. If I were Elon Musk, I would think of anyone I may have pissed off lately. Did I upset a balance or natural order? Did I kick over an apple cart?
I would then go through that list and circle all the names of people who a) have a lot of money, b) are partisan progressives, and c) who may have an issue with the concept of free speech and my plan to extend it even to the people they disagree with politically.
Once I had a list of names, I would then tweet that list and wonder out loud if they are a shadowy donor to this shadowy dark money group. I'd also wonder aloud if the companies they are targeting are aware of this.
At least, that's what I would do. I'm sure Elon has his own plans.
