Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot took a break from ignoring crime and judging reporters by the color of their skin to speak out about Roe v. Wade. Last week, a decision was leaked from the Supreme Court revealing a vote to overturn the controversial Roe v. Wade decision. In a tweet, Lightfoot made the unsubstantiated claim that the Supreme Court is coming for the LGBTQ+ community next, issuing a "call to arms."
Mayor Lightfoot shattered a glass ceiling in 2019 becoming the first LGBTQ+, African-American woman elected Mayor of Chicago.
Vocabulary.com defines arms as "weapons" and adds "if a rebel group starts acquiring arms, it becomes a clear threat to its opponents." Other synonyms are implements of war, munitions, and weaponry. Not unlike the weaponry used in Lightfoot's Chicago last weekend, where 23 people were shot, five of them fatally.
Violent rhetoric has already led to a pro-life organization being firebombed in Wisconsin by people who share Lightfoot's political opinions. Some critics questions the wisdom of Mayor Lightfoot using such rhetoric.
Supporters of Roe v. Wade have been using the politics of fear, and the fact few in the media will call them out, to make unsubstantiated, fear-based claims about what overturning Roe v. Wade means. Lightfoot's claim that they are coming for LGBTQ+ next has been debunked BY the leaked decision itself. President Joe Biden made the unsubstantiated claim that overturning Roe v. Wade would lead to LGBTQ+ students being segregated in the classroom. Another unsubstantiated claim is that the Supreme Court would make interracial marriage illegal. No one has explained why Justice Clarence Thomas--who is in an interracial marriage--would vote for such a decision.
If Roe v. Wade is overturned, a decision to impose or not impose abortion restrictions would be left up to the states. In the blue state of Illinois, Lightfoot's Chicago would remain a safe haven for abortion.
