Ron DeSantis is signing conservative reform after conservative reform to end the Florida legislative session. And possibly segue into a presidential run?
His most recent batch involves criminal justice reform. Though, unlike other criminal justice reforms, DeSantis looks to make things more difficult for criminals and less difficult for law-abiding citizens. HB 1627 bans a lot of the woke "bail reform" policies that have caused a rise in crime in progressive areas they've been enacted. HB 1359 targets the trafficking of fentanyl. And HB 1297 will impose the death penalty for pedophiles who commit sexual battery against children under the age of 12.
The governor said in a statement about this specific common-sense reform, he is prepared to go "all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to overrule judicial precedents which have unjustly shielded child rapists from the death penalty and denied victims and their loved ones the opportunity to pursue ultimate justice against these most heinous criminals."
It is WIDELY expected DeSantis will announce his run for president after the legislative session. That day is expected to come in the next week or so. Most polls have him in second place even though he hasn't announced yet.
