Actor Johnny Depp is suing his ex-wife Amber Heard for defamation to the tune of $50,000,000. You have no doubt seen the story as you've been scrolling through various social media platforms. Depp is best known for 21 Jump Street and Pirates of the Caribbean. Heard is best known for... honestly, the only movie I recognized was Aquaman, and it was terrible.
Here are five things you need to know.
1. In May of 2016, Heard filed for divorce. She claimed Johnny was physically abusive, which Depp denied. They settled out of court to the tune of $7 million. The actress pledged to donate it to the ACLU and LA Children’s hospital. However, there is serious doubt she actually donated any of the money.
2. In December of 2018, Heard wrote a piece for the Washington Post claiming, “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.” THIS is what the CURRENT $50M defamation trial is about. Heard and her lawyers claim Depp’s name was never mentioned in the article. BUT--based on the article, it’s very clear who she was talking about.
“Then two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.”
3. Leaked audio shows Heard mocking Depp, saying no one will believe him. Heard admitted in more leaked audio played at the trial that she hit Johnny.
4. Evidence and testimony presented at the trial also show a nasty finger injury Depp suffered when Heard threw a bottle at him. Here’s a picture of the aftermath.
5. Due to Heard’s allegations, Depp’s career has been ruined.
The testimony continues on Thursday. We will update you of any development.
