Isaiah Lee attacked Dave Chappelle early this month as the comedian was finishing a performance. Lee's motive was still unclear, but he spilled the beans in an interview with the New York Post. It was what some people expected. Lee assaulted the comedian because when Chappelle made jokes about the LGBTQ community, it hurt Lee's feelings.
Lee, who identifies as bisexual, told the Post he attacked Chappelle to let the comedian know he was triggered by Chappelle's jokes. “I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect.”
People speculated the attack could have been provoked by media controversy over Chappelle's recent Netflix special. Chappelle himself joked "it was a trans man" as security was handling business with Lee backstage.
Chappelle had said Lee told him the attack was to draw attention to his grandmother, who got gentrified out of her apartment. Lee clarified what he actually said was, "I told him my mother and grandmother, who fought for his civil rights to be able to speak, would be upset at the things he said."
As for why Lee was carrying a knife inside of a gun, he said it was for protection since he's kinda a celebrity himself. Lee, besides being a guy who attacks comedians over jokes, is also what critics call a weak-ass rapper.
Chappelle found himself embroiled in another controversy this weekend. Four people complained about jokes he told during a performance in Ohio.
Lee is being charged with misdemeanors for the attack, including "unauthorized access to the stage area during a performance" and "commission of an act that delays an event or interferes with a performer." He's not being charged with a felony because the attack happened in Los Angeles where the district attorney does not believe in prosecuting criminals.
Chappelle did not comment on the interview. He also didn't comment on the four people upset on Twitter over his Ohio performance.
