Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter may or may not be on hold. Musk is still committed to the purchase, but there is a disagreement about whether fake users account for 5% of all Twitter users or less. If Musk entered the deal thinking there was only a certain amount of fake users but that number isn't accurate, he wasn't given the correct information upon which to base his offer. So, it's a really awkward time for a report to come out that half of Joe Biden's Twitter followers are fake. This is the @POTUS account, as opposed to @JoeBiden.
Or, 49.6% are fake. That is less than half. Gotta be precise for the "independent" "fact" checkers. Musk whipped out his calculator banged on the numbers and came to the revelation that 49.6% is more than 5%.
It's in response to a Newsweek article. Software company SparkToro discovered that 49.3% of accounts following the official POTUS Twitter account are fake. They based their analysis on a number of factors, including location issues, default profile images, and new users.
Current Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal went on a long Tweet rant claiming there aren't that many fake accounts. And if there were, it would be impossible to crowdsource and have users look it up themselves. Musk thought that was crap. He said as much.
Why an accurate count of legitimate accounts is so crucial is it's a major determining factor of the actual worth of the company. How do advertisers know what they’re getting for their money if they don't know how many real people are seeing their advertisements?
Musk is still committed to the deal. But much like the Project Veritas videos, it's a rough time to have the bird app's internal attitudes being exposed to sunlight.
