It was announced on Thursday that CNN+, a streaming network for people willing to pay for CNN, is shutting down on April 30th. As it turns out, if you take a news network people don't watch for free and charge people a monthly fee, they don't sign up for it. Odd, right? There is a group of people who legitimately thought CNN+ made business sense.
Here is CNN breaking the news about CNN. This will go down as one of the all-time unintentionally funny tweets.
CNBC reports the decision to shut down the failed on-demand network was made by Chris Licht, incoming president of CNN. He starts in the job on May 1, and there have already been plans to change CNN from a liberal gossip channel to a network that covers "news." It's one of the reasons Brian Stelter, a star in the CNN+ galaxy, is believed to be out of a job soon.
CNN invested hundreds of millions of dollars on new talent and programming for CNN+, which will now move to either HBO Max, the 3rd place CNN news channel, or the CNN website. While not clear from any news that's been reported, I'm fairly certain Chris Wallace had his secretary flip over his desk in anger.
Tyler Cardon, CEO of Blaze Media and a man who knows how to run a successful on-demand empire, said of the news "To build a successful subscription business in the news/opinion space requires the active, enthusiastic, loyal support of your subscriber base. Nothing repels enthusiasm and loyalty like inauthenticity." Again, this would explain why Brian Stelter may be unemployed soon. (Disclaimer: Tyler Cardon is my CEO and a swell guy).
The deity or deities of content have smiled upon us loyal subjects today. Elon Musk launched Plan B, and Chris Licht launched Plan "Oy, This Was a Mistake." The meltdowns from liberals with sore buttocks will be aplenty this afternoon.
