When Karine Jean-Pierre was named as Jen Psaki's successor, she shattered a glass ceiling becoming the first LGBTQ+ black female to assume the position of White House Press Secretary. It was celebrated because, as we all know, representation matters. However, certain comments Jean-Pierre has made have called into question her abilities and qualifications. Jean-Pierre's past support for election fraud conspiracies warrants the criticism.
Stacey Abrams gained notoriety by losing the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election and refusing to concede, claiming that the election was stolen from her. It was a popular conspiracy theory spread by prominent progressives like Senator Elizabeth Warren. Yet, no evidence of voter fraud or a stolen election has ever been put forth by Abrams. Experts say voter fraud is extremely rare, and Twitter had been marking tweets claiming voter fraud with a fact check saying so. It is unclear how they missed this one.
The other issue for Jean-Pierre is her relationship with the media outlets with which she'll be dealing. She is involved in a relationship with CNN reporter Suzanne Malveaux, which critics say could be a conflict of interests. The incoming Press Secretary also claims Fox News, one of the news outlets sitting in the front row, is racist.
Unclear is how this will affect her working with DOOCY, Fox News' White House Correspondent. There have already been issues with Joe Biden and Jen Psaki regarding DOOCY. And that's with them not accusing his employer of hating people based on the color of their skin. At least, not out loud. DOOCY has a reputation for asking questions that a) matter, and b) the White House doesn't want to answer. Jean-Pierre's feelings towards his employer could prove to be problematic.
When the White House finished cleaning up the shards of glass from the ceiling that has just been shattered, these are issues they may want to address. Karine Jean-Pierre starts her new position next week.
