Let's set the stage. On May 24, Uvalde Police Chief Pete Arredondo "led" the horrific response to the Uvalde school shooting. A response that grows more horrific with every story that comes out. On May 31, the disgraced Arredondo was sworn into the city council. Arredondo wanted to be exempt from meetings "in an effort to be more transparent following criticisms of law enforcement's handling" of the shooting. And the city council was going to give him the exemption.
Until Kim Hammond spoke. Ms. Hammond lives two doors down from the school.
Hammond, like what appears to be every other Uvalde resident, wants Arredondo gone. So she did research. Giving him an exception saves his seat. But if he misses three meetings, he can be removed by the board. Hammond wanted that, assuming Arredondo won't ever show his face at a city council meeting. On the off chance he does, he'll have to answer to citizens.
Councilmember King was moved by Hammond's emotional speech.
"I heard you guys, and this bothers me a whole lot. I had an idea when I came in here. I was going to do a very short, grant leave of absence so that we didn't have to vote on it over and over and over. So you guys wouldn't see him. But I don't need to talk a whole lot more. I make a motion we do not grant the leave of absence for Councilman Arredondo."
The request was denied. And the old adage "don't doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world" still rings true. In this case, it only took one committed citizen.
