Bill Melugin is an intrepid reporter who is very good at what he does. His coverage of Joe Biden's border crisis led him to become a Fox News contributor. Becoming a Fox News contributor led to Media Matters putting out a hit on him, labeling the reporter "anti-immigrant." Of course, low-information blue checkmarks on Twitter are following suit. Meet Daily Beast and Deadspin "reporter" Timothy Burke.
Burke was trolling Fox News when he caught Melugin spreading unverified rumors. Or "caught" him "spreading" rumors, rather.
I had heard that rumor at first, as well. Odd thing about tragic news events like this. There is a LOT of unverified information that gets spread at first as people try verifying details. It's good to wait twenty-four hours before any hot takes. Only in this case, Burke edited his clip down to an out-of-context eight seconds. Melugin was SHOOTING DOWN the rumors. But that doesn't help Media Matters spread disinformation about Melugin as a reporter.
Melugin, who is in Texas covering a story where close to twenty children were murdered, was not in the mood.
Here's the full clip.
Twitter just announced a new crisis misinformation policy, to prevent the spread of misinformation on Twitter at the time of a crisis. As of this writing, Burke's tweet has not been labeled manipulated media or disinformation. I'll keep refreshing to see if Twitter ever gets around to it.
