UFC 273 was in Jacksonville on Saturday, and there were two key developments. The first was that Long Island's own Aljamain Sterling became the undisputed Bantamweight Champion to the dismay of Instagram trolls and Russian bot farms. The other is that Florida's own (and America's Governor) Ron DeSantis received a rockstar-esque reception when he was announced to the crowd. A reminder that the real world isn't what you see on MSNBC or CNN.
No one said "gay." But you could hear a 'f*ck Joe Biden' chant during the title fight.
This is the UFC's second visit to Jacksonville since the pandemic. UFC president Dana White, to the dismay of critics, chose the city last April for UFC 261 as the first full attendance, indoor arena show since the pandemic began. DeSantis was one of the first Governors to open his state back up even as Joe Biden's "government guys" were telling people not to. As you can see by the response of him walking through the arena, Floridians appreciate him for it.
Even before the UFC, DeSantis got an endorsement of sorts from the media's other favorite villain, Joe Rogan. Rogan did a comedy show in Jacksonville the night before and opened up by saying "Florida has the best governor in the game." The podcaster has spoken highly of DeSantis before. This was the first time he used the governor as an applause line.
Ron DeSantis is rumored to be running for president in 2024. I'm not one to speculate. But I don't not agree with the first tweet in this post. He has to get through reelection in 2022 first. I don't think he'll have an issue there.
