A California sheriff has gone viral, with a post on X illustrating the ways Target refuses to let them help the store prevent shoplifting. Here's a tease. Police want to be able to enforce the laws that, shockingly enough, are still on the books. Target as a corporation -- whose not shareholders include Blackrock and Vanguard -- goes out of their way to make it difficult for authorities to do so.
Before we get started, let's first take a visit to your local Target:

Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper posted on X that his department had been contacted numerous times by Target stores about shoplifting taking place. Cooper sat down with the company to discuss ways they can coordinate with detectives to deal with issue.
At the meeting, Target's head of regional security had guidelines police had to follow first:
- Police could not contact suspects inside the store
- Police could not handcuff suspects in the store
- IF police arrested someone, the suspect had to be processed outside and behind the store, even in the rain.
The corp didn't want to create a scene inside the store and get the "negative press" of people filing the arrest and putting them on social media. As opposed to the social media posts shared at the beginning of this post and the countless others that are all over X and TikTok.
"Our deputies watched a lady on camera bring in her own shopping bags, go down the body wash isle, and grab a bunch of Native body washes. Then she went to customer service and return them! Target chose to do nothing and simply let it happen. Yet somehow, locking up deodorant and raising prices on everyday items we need to survive is their best answer."

Sheriff Cooper concluded that his department would never tell Target how to stock shelves, they shouldn't tell police how to [recent crime and arrest criminals. At the end of the day, Target needs to want to do something to fix the problem. Few corporate chains these days show the desire to do so.
Last year, Target announced the company had lost $400,000,000.00 to theft.
