Velma from Scooby-Doo is having a rough go of it. First, she got shamed on the internet for calling the cops on LeBron James. Now her new cartoon Velma (starring Mindy Kaling), where she was stepping out as the lead, is getting panned by critics.
ALL critics, across the board. Because I know some people might be thinking "oh, you conservatives are just upset there is a gay person and are calling it woke." Nope. And the part about Velma being gay is less woke as it is lazy writing. The original Scooby Doo cartoon debuted September 13, 1969. Starting on September 14, 1969 the joke was that Velma was a lesbian, Fred and Daphne were f*cking, and Shaggy was stoned out of his gourd. People have been referencing that for over fifty years. Saying the words out loud in 2023 isn't impressive.
Though they did turn Shaggy into a cuck.
Plus, even corporate media outlets like The Wrap and Variety who praise Velma's sexuality think the rest of the cartoon su-diddly-ucks. They point to "the pointless nudity, the gratuitous violence and gore" and that "these characters are just really unpleasant to spend time with, and it starts at the top with Velma."
This is a problem with these modern reboots. They are meant to target a nostalgic audience. There isn't a modern audience of zoomers clamoring for a cartoon about a talking dog that solves mysteries. The cartoon is meant for people who were fans of the cartoon, but then producers strip away everything that made people love the cartoon so that it fits a "modern audience" who doesn't care about the cartoon.
Velma missed the mark with everyone. Including Catholic priests.
Woke progressives who view the cartoon as a parody of woke progressivism hate it too. So much so that they accused "secret conservative" Kaling of sabotage.
Velma has the rare honor of being panned on Rotten Tomatoes by both "professional" critics (50%) and the audience (9%).
Kaling recently came out and said that The Office, a show that was the most popular streamed show during the pandemic, could NEVER be made today. The fact that she is right about that but a cartoon-like Velma could be made tells you all you need to know about the entertainment industry.
