Has your gas-guzzling SUV ever sent you a message telling you a specific time when you are not allowed to fill your vehicle with gas? Because Tesla owners are getting messages informing them of when NOT to charge their electric vehicles during California's "flex alert," which is where Californians are told when they can and cannot use electricity.
Last week, Californians were "advised" by the non-profit American Public Power Association to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, turn off unnecessary lights and avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles. It was ironic because, only days earlier, unelected government bureaucrats in California announced a ban on gas-powered cars by 2035.
California's governor decreed the "flex alert" official.
Shortly thereafter, Tesla owners were sent a message TO THEIR CARS, warning them and suggesting they obey. Yes, the cars that their owners were foolishly under the impression they owned.
"The current heat wave is expected to stress California's grid this weekend. Use the Scheduled Departure setting to ensure your vehicle is charged and preconditioned to your preferences at time of departure, while avoiding charging during higher price evening hours between 4-9 PM."
Excuse me for a second.
The company you bought your car from sending you messages from the government, via WiFi and the internet you don't own, is not that far off from the company disabling features in your car based on other government "emergencies." It is so not that far off, Colorado homeowners are discovering they are unable to lower their thermostats past the government-agreed-upon temperature.
Not unlike some banks deciding what vehicles they will and won't give you loans for is not that far off from credit card companies telling you what products you can and can't charge.
The EU just announced a proposal for a mandatory reduction of electricity use to "flatten a curve." If only they could find major companies willing to help force compliance.
