On May 16, a 2 1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois named Eva proved exactly why all dogs go to Heaven. After a mountain lion attacked her owner Erin Wilson during a walk in northern California, Eva responded by jumping in and saving her.
"I yelled 'Eva!' and she came running, and she hit that cat really hard," Wilson told The Sacramento Bee.
Though Wilson was out of immediate danger, the same wasn't true of her heroic dog, and the poor pup was soon overpowered by the mountain lion and suffered terrible injuries before Wilson and a motorist she had flagged down were able to beat the lion off with a tire iron, pipe, and pepper spray.
Wilson immediately ran Eva to an emergency veterinarian clinic, where she was found to have suffered from multiple skull fractures, punctures in her sinuses, and severe eye damage. Later, she developed seizures. And on Wednesday, Wilson announced via Instagram that Eva had succumbed to her injuries.
"Goodbye my beautiful sweet girl. You are my world, my light, my best friend. The world is a much darker place."
Eva certainly has earned the title of Goodest Girl, and while the world may, in fact, be a darker place without her, Heaven is undoubtedly a brighter place. Of this I am certain.
Dogs really are the best, and no one wants to hear about bad things happening to them--and we definitely don't want to see bad things happen to them--but stories like this one remind us why we love them so much--why so many are more than willing to fight off animals to save them, too.
Rest in peace, Eva.
