Tim Allen has spoken out about the failed Disney movie Lightyear. Allen was the man who originally brought the character to life in the Toy Story franchise, and there was confusion about why he would be replaced with progressive activist actor Chris Evans. Allen has stayed out of it, until an interview with Extra.
Allen stayed out of the controversy until after the movie was released because he had spoken with Pixar executive years ago about exploring Buzz's origins. “It came up in one of the sessions. I said what a fun movie that would be.”
The problem is that no one involved in the Toy Story franchise was involved with this movie, so there was no connection to the original character, much like what Disney is doing with Star Wars and Marvel; they're picking characters at random and sloppily slapping content together. That may have been the case with Lightyear itself.
Allen lamented, “It has no relationship to Buzz. It’s just no connection. I wish there was a better connection. [...] It just doesn’t seem to have any connection to the toy."
The movie also pushed its way into America's culture wars. Tim Allen has turned into an outspoken conservative, which is a rarity in Hollywood. It is widely believed that being an outspoken conservative, or even a milquetoast conservative, or even slightly to the right of Karl Marx, doesn't play in Hollywood, and that was why he was replaced with Chris Evans. When a fellow conservative actress wondered why they would "castrate these iconic, beloved characters," some felt that was what she was alluding to.
There was also the controversy of a same-sex kiss that was taken out of the movie but put back in by Pixar to spite America's Governor Ron DeSantis. In response to the controversy, Chris Evans lashed out and attacked half the country who may go see the movie.
Allen also said “There’s really no Toy Story’s Buzz without Woody," who was voiced by the more reliably liberal actor Tom Hanks. No word on if Disney is planning a Woody stand-alone movie, or if Hanks will be replaced like Allen was.
