It’s been a tough go for the Cowboys in the travel department this week, but that won’t give them any gimmes in the win column.
Oklahoma State fell to Iowa State on the road 66-42, falling to 0-3 in Big 12 play and 8-8 on the season. The Cowboys have been outscored by an average of 20.5 in their last two.
After a decent start, the Cowboys got buried thanks to turnover issues, a disparity in paint points and those dreaded free-throws.
Despite cold weather causing travel troubles and a delayed tip, the Cowboys actually fell into a rhythm early, starting 6-for-10 from the field and building a 15-10 lead on the home team nearing the middle of the opening half. But the Cowboys got a little sloppy and the Cyclones made them pay.
During a stretch midway through the first half, Oklahoma State turned it over five times in just over six and a half minutes. The Cyclones, who scored 20 on 20 OSU turnovers in the game, used those foibles as fuel for a 14-3 run to take back control of the game, including 10 straight in just over four minutes.
Once their shots started falling, and their lobs started landing, the Cyclones were able to build a lead as much as 13 down the stretch of the first half and took a 37-26 lead into the break. Things didn’t get any better for the Pokes in the second half.
After shooting 40% in the first half, OSU shot just 5-for-22 in the second and 1-for-10 from 3. The Cowboys shot a season-low 32% from the floor and dug themselves a hole two first-half scoring droughts of six and a half minutes and nearly four minutes, respectively. That hole proved too deep.
The few Cyclones fans that braved the blizzard were rewarded with a runaway victory. Iowa State finished shooting 47% from the field and dominated in the paint, outscoring OSU 42-16. The Cowboys shot a season-low 36% on free-throws (5-of-14) against the Cyclones’ 82%, despites getting three more tries on the road.
Eric Dailey Jr. was the lone Cowboy in double digits, scoring 12 on 4-of-7 to shooting. Next up was Javon Small with eight and Bryce Thompson scored seven. Brandon Garrison led all players with eight rebounds but was held to just one point.
Meanwhile, four Cyclones scored at least 10 with Tamin Lipsey leading all scorers with 17. Milan Momcilovic and Hason Ward added a dozen each, and Tre King scored 11.
Next up: The Cowboys will try to brave the winter weather and get back to Stillwater before they host current No. 3 Kansas, fresh off a loss to UCF, at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
