![]() Many are wondering if this is the year Oklahoma State can beat Oklahoma and win a Big 12 title. Well, College GameDay’s Desmond Howard thinks this is the year OSU beats Clemson and competes for a national title. The College GameDay crew redid their CFP picks on Saturday morning’s show with the addition of the Big Ten, and Howard, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Michigan, predicted a Final Four of Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State and Oklahoma State. Pokes’ fans would probably be OK with Howard stopping there, but he went a step further and put OSU in the national title game against Alabama.
For what it’s worth, OSU is 1-0 all-time against Alabama, beating the Tide 34-31 in the 2006 Independence Bowl. OSU has never played Clemson. The Cowboy are sporting the W-O-W combination with a clean-looking Patriot Pete helmet.
Since 2011, the Pokes have donned that W-O-W look five times in a home opener, including the last time Tulsa visited Stillwater in 2017. Most importantly, OSU is 11-2 overall in the white-orange-white since starting the mix-and-match unis. The Cowboys wore the same Patriot Pete helmet with black facemask in the 2017 Camping World Bowl, a 30-21 victory against Virginia Tech.

Oklahoma State takes on Tulsa on Saturday in an in-state rivalry that has been dubbed the Turnpike Classic. The Cowboys are 41-27-5 in the matchup all-time against Tulsa dating to the teams’ first meeting in 1914, a 13-6 Oklahoma A&M win in Stillwater. Here is a preview of the teams’ 74th meeting. 2019 Defensive Stats
Battle of Returning QBsTwo classes separated OSU quarterback Spencer Sanders and Tulsa QB Zach Smith, but the two weren’t that far away from each other as recruits. Sanders, a four-star prospect, was the No. 171 player in the 2018 class. Sanders threw for 9,692 yards and 116 touchdowns in his final three seasons of Texas high school football. Smith, a three-star recruit, was the No. 365 player in the 2016 class. He threw for 10,260 yards and 114 touchdowns in his final three seasons of Texas high school football. The big different there is that Sanders also ran for 3,309 yards in that time. From there, Sanders went to OSU, and Smith went to Baylor before transferring to Tulsa. And now both enter their second season with the reigns in hand at their respective school. “[Having a returning quarterback is a huge factor leading into the season,” Tulsa coach Philip Montgomery said. “… It’s the chemistry, the timing of things as you’re working those routes whether it’s on air of versus the defense, just getting that part of it down. I think your huddle, that clear, decisive, ‘Hey, this is the guy that’s gonna be calling the shots, gonna be pulling the trigger,’ plus you’ve already been to battles with him. You already know how he’s gonna react and what his mantra and his personality is gonna be on the field. I think all of that leads you in a good way as you have one of those guys coming back that you have confidence in.” Featured Back vs. CommitteeThere isn’t a question as to who Spencer Sanders will hand the ball to for the majority of the season opener, but it’s a different story for the Golden Hurricane. This game pins a featured back against a committee backfield, as Chuba Hubbard is set to defend his NCAA rushing title against a whole host of backs from TU. Montgomery dropped six names when talking about his running backs this week, but he knows the Cowboys are giving it to No. 30. “Obviously Hubbard is … he’s fantastic, right?” Montgomery said. “He’s so dynamic, does so many things well. He runs the football like no other. He’s got great speed. He’s strong. He runs through tackles. He’s got great vision. Does a great job in the passing game.” There were some saying Hubbard was worked too hard in 2019, finishing the year with 328 carries, where he gained 2,094 yards and 21 touchdowns. A few weeks ago, Gundy said it wouldn’t be ideal that Hubbard gets the ball 30 times a game in 2020, but that “he’s gonna get his carries.” Tulsa returns Shamari Brooks, Corey Taylor, T.K. Wilkerson and Christian Lovick who combined for 449 carries, 2,103 yards and 20 TDs in 2019. Montgomery mentioned all those guys in his weekly press conference as well as transfers Deneric Prince (Texas A&M) and Anthony Watkins (Missouri). Of that group of six, it’s likely Brooks will be the main source of Tulsa’s rushing, as he was last season, accounting for 1,248 yards and six scores, but Montgomery said Tulsa will again take a committee approach to rushing the football. “This is the most depth, since I’ve been here, in the running back room,” Montgomery said. “We’ve always been a running back by committee-type team. Those guys have been really, really unselfish when it comes to that in just staying healthy and also giving guys the opportunity to step on the field and take advantage of their skillset.”
The post Game Preview: Tulsa-OSU Matchup Provides Returning QBs and Featured Back vs. Committee appeared first on Pistols Firing. ![]() Read this original article at Pistols Firing Blog. ![]() Expectations are high for the 2020 Cowboys with a plethora of stars returning on both sides of the ball. Anything less than a trip to the Big 12 title game would be a disappointment to most fans. But before they embark on the road to Arlington, the Cowboys will need to dispatch that other in-state school. (I’m just happy for some actual football to cover and consume.) Here are five things to ponder as we prepare for OSU’s season opener against Tulsa. 1. A Different Kind of OpenerOklahoma State is on a program-best streak of 24 consecutive home-opening wins and has earned Ws in five-straight season openers. In 15 seasons, Mike Gundy’s only debut losses have come against a reigning national champion in Florida State (in 2014) and during a road trip to No. 13 Georgia (in 2007). This Saturday’s bout with Tulsa won’t present that type of challenge, but this is not your normal season or your normal opener. Normally the Cowboys get at least a Missouri State or South Bama to work out the kinks before conference play begins. This year it’s Tulsa then straight into Big 12 play. I’m not necessarily concerned about the Pokes dropping one to TU, but (in comparison to other years) I will be a bit more anxious if they come out and look rusty or flat on Saturday. 2. Zach Smith Can Sling ItThe former Baylor QB didn’t have his best game against OSU last season, totaling just 228 yards and a score in the 40-21 loss, but we’ve seen enough from Zach Smith to know that he can be dangerous. Smith was a top 300 prospect that Philip Montgomery recruited while he was the OC at Baylor and then handed the reins of his Tulsa offense to last season. He has been somewhat hot-and-cold but he’s had some big-time performances, like that big win over No. 3 OU in Norman in 2017 when he slung it for 463 yards and four TDs. I’m not predicting a career day for Smith against the Cowboys. I’m merely pointing out that every QB OSU faces this season will have been a Big 12 starter. 3. Tulsa’s Got Receivers TooOkay, so there aren’t any Tylans roaming the hash marks for the Golden Hurricane, but Zach Smith has some playmakers to toss the rock to. When asked about what he expect from Tulsa earlier this week, Mike Gundy pointed to Tulsa’s talent at wideout. “They’ve got wide receivers who can go up and get the ball,”said Gundy. “They put them in the inside slot position, and they do a nice job of play/pass and double moves and such. I would expect them to attack us in that area.” The biggest threat to OSU’s secondary will be senior Keylon Stokes, the American Conference’s No. 2 returning receiver this season. Why was that double-move so fresh in Gundy’s memory? You can thank Stokes who burned OSU’s secondary with this 39-yard score last fall. As our own Dustin Ragusa outlined, it’s something we might see again on Saturday. 4. They’ve Got Some Rushers TooWhile Oklahoma State can proudly boast the nation’s leading rusher last season in Chuba Hubbard, the Golden Hurricane’s RB group has collectively racked up as many career yards as any team, save one. Four returning Tulsa running backs boast 4,541 career yards and career 51 TDs, a total that’s second only to Clemson. It’s headlined by Shamari Brooks (2,700 yards and 23 TDs) and Corey Taylor II (1,490 yards and 22 TDs). Last season Brooks racked up 107 yards and two scores against the Cowboys. “This is the deepest running back room that we’ve had since I’ve been here — guys who are very talented all (down the) line,” Philip Montgomery told the Tulsa World. TU also added former Missouri RB Anthony Watkins, who was granted a waiver by the NCAA and is immediately eligible. He played in one game for Mizzou last year but came in as a four-star recruit and No. 34 RB in his class according to ESPN. 5. Despite Losing a Lot, TU’s D Has Some TalentLast year six of the Golden Hurricane’s top eight tacklers were seniors (seniors accounted for 61 percent of TU’s total tackles), including TU’s sack-leader Trevis Gipson, who was drafted by the Chicago Bears. But TU has some players left on that side of the ball, and the best one may be junior inside linebacker/edge rusher Zaven Collins. As a sophomore Collins was the Golden Hurricane’s No. 2 in tackles (97, tackles for loss (27) and sacks (2). The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder former high school QB is athletic, has a nose for the football and should prove to be TU’s biggest playmaker. OSU Bullets• OSU’s home football record hasn’t been stellar (going back to 2017), and when you look at the upsets around the Big 12, COVID certainly won’t help what home field advantage the Pokes have enjoyed.
With some simple math, the numbers of OSU fans at the game could be very comparable between last year in Tulsa (half of Skelly Field is 15k) and this year in a Boone Pickens Stadium (25 percent of 60k is 15k) with seating restrictions. • You probably need to take a few minutes and browse this retro collection the Student Union store released
