Oklahoma State’s Week 9 tilt against Kansas State on Nov. 7 is still up in the air in terms of timing. The Big 12 announced Monday that OSU’s game against the Wildcats could be at 11 a.m. on ABC or 3 p.m. on FOX. It would be OSU’s third game on FOX in as many weeks, having played on the network against Iowa State last weekend and Texas this upcoming weekend. OSU has also played on ABC this season, beating West Virginia on the network on Sept. 26. The post TV Details, Kick Time for OSU’s Week 9 Bout vs. K-State Announced appeared first on Pistols Firing. Top-350 national recruit Cam’Ron Valdez, considered one of OSU’s top targets at the running back position for the 2021 recruiting cycle, committed last week to Texas Tech. His decision leaves OSU — and the dozen-plus other programs who missed on him — in a quest to pick up the pieces and refocus priorities at the position as the December signing day fast approaches. For Oklahoma State, there remains plenty of options. Below are a few names to watch as the Cowboys’ staff shifts its focus elsewhere. 1. Alton McCaskill | 6-1 | 200It may be time to give this Texas talent the full-court press. OSU was his first offer in the spring of 2019, but the big dogs are quickly learning how special this kid is, with USC, Alabama, Arizona State and Notre Dame among some of his recent offers. He’s got a great frame, good size and looks like a great pairing next to Jaden Nixon, OSU’s other running back recruit. 2. Tiyon Evans | 5-11 | 215A junior college standout from Hutch, Tiyon Evans looks like a lock to head to South Carolina. But what do I always say about recruiting? Nothing is ever a lock until the papers are signed … and even then it’s still no sure thing. Evans could give OSU a real physical and explosive presence in the backfield who has experience, too. OSU is among those vying for his talents, but South Carolina, Tennessee, Houston and Maryland are in the mix here as well. 3. Devin Neal | 5-11 | 208Neal is a Lawrence, Kansas native who earlier this spring committed to Kansas over Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma State and others. Perhaps he’ll reconsider. Kansas is #verybad at the football, so the pitch for OSU to potentially flip him is an easy one to imagine: Come play for a winning program and stay somewhat close to home. He’s KU’s only four-star commitment in its 2021 class. 4. Qwontrel Walker | 5-8 | 200 poundsLocal folks know the name, and Stillwater folks know the name then stand on a table and scream for OSU to offer. This kid can absolutely go. Playmaker in space who averages about 10 yards per carry for Stillwater High and has explosiveness and shiftiness that can translate. He’s on the smaller side, but it hasn’t in any way hindered him from producing at an elite level in high school, as he recorded more than 2,000 yards rushing and 33 touchdowns last season. No reported scholarship offers yet, but OSU could be one to watch. The post Resetting the RB Target Board after Cam Valdez’s TTU Pledge appeared first on Pistols Firing. Read this original article at Pistols Firing Blog. As promised, Mondays are for Believe it or Not — a weekly column wherein we reset by sifting through the hottest takes related to OSU’s game and determine whether, well, we should believe those takes or not. We’ve talked a lot about the OSU defense, the running backs and the QB performance of Shane Illingworth. Today, it’s more of the same with a new topic sprinkled in and a lot of belief to go around. We’re sticking to the hits! 1. OSU is the best team in the Big 12[looks both ways] [squints to make sure the coast is clear] Answer: Believe it There are just two unbeaten teams in conference play thus far: Kansas State (4-0), and Oklahoma State (3-0). Only one of those teams has its starting quarterback at full strength. Then there is Iowa State (3-1), which OSU just beat, followed by West Virginia, Texas and OU, all of which are 2-2 in league play. Oklahoma State is a tier above all of them. It has the best defense. It has a balanced offensive attack that’s only getting better led by a Heisman-good RB. And Mike Gundy, dare I say, is coaching himself some football right now. Firing on all cylinders, this team is. Even Gundy’s hair has some extra shine to it these days. It’s not going to get easier, which goes without saying but, you know, should probably still be said. Two of of OSU’s next three opponents are ranked inside the top-25, and the one that’s not — Texas — is top-25 caliber. The schedule was always heavily back-loaded, and we’ll learn a lot about this team over the next three weeks. If OSU can emerge from this Texas-Kansas State-Oklahoma gauntlet at 2-1, or better yet, 3-0, then the Big 12 is there for the taking. 2. Chuba is all the way backAnswer: Believe it I’m old enough to remember when people really thought that LD Brown, not Chuba Hubbard, was Oklahoma State’s best ball-carrier. It was all of four weeks ago! Obviously, I cautioned you not to buy into that. LD is having a breakout senior season. Credit to him. But Hubbard remains OSU’s best and most explosive back, and Saturday he again proved why, rushing for 139 yards on 25 carries, hauling in one pass for 21 yards and scoring on this incredible run after it appeared he was going down at the line of scrimmage. Hubbard certainly started slow relative to Heisman expectations, rushing for *only* 93 yards on 27 carries against Tulsa and *only* 101 yards on 22 carries against West Virginia. But his 139 yard-outing against Iowa State marked his third straight 100-plus outing of the season, and that explosiveness we thought was missing from his repertoire earlier in the year is absolutely, positively back. He’s locked in as the Chuba of old, and expect OSU, with Spencer Sanders struggling in his return from injury, to turn to him as the focal point of this offense until further notice. 3. Spencer Sanders is the unquestioned QB1Answer: Believe it Keep in mind, Spencer Sanders left Game 1 early, so the below stats may be a bit misleading. But here’s what Spencer Sanders’ and Shane Illingworth’s season stats look like, with Illingworth playing two complete games and Sanders essentially playing one complete game.
Illingworth has 18 more passing attempts and one fewer INT, plus a higher completion percentage. Sanders has the rushing dynamic but has been turnover prone. And Mike Gundy last week mentioned that he may use both quarterbacks moving forward, potentially signaling a Rudolph-J.W. Walsh dynamic between these too. Truth is, it’s just not likely. Don’t see it. Will Illingworth play again this season? Maybe. Probably, I’d say. But Gundy trusts his vets, and Sanders qualifies as that now after entering the season as a second-year starter. He’s not going to pull him in favor of a freshman, unless Sanders is flat really bad. And Sanders, while he had some errant passes, actually had some bright moments on Saturday. As he eases his way back from injury, there should be more of those moments and fewer mistakes. He makes this offense go with the ability to run it and pass it, and he’ll be the clear-cut No. 1 at the position moving forward. “We got some things out of him that he shows you, he gives you in practice,” said Gundy on Saturday. “He might mistake something and get you in a bad play, but then he might turn around and make two or three really good ones. That’s what we had today from him.” The post Believe it or Not: OSU the Best in the Big 12, No QB Competition appeared first on Pistols Firing. Read this original article at Pistols Firing Blog.

Oklahoma State’s tight end/full back hybrids were a big part of OSU’s 24-21 victory against Iowa State. Many call for Jelani Woods and Logan Carter to be used more frequently, and maybe a game like Saturday’s gives the OSU coaching staff more confidence in that thought moving forward. “Going into it, there was a little bit of a rivalry there,” OSU offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn said. “They’ve got a great set of tight ends there at Iowa State, and our guys wanted to play well. We wanted to get our guys active, too. There was a little bit of motivation from both Logan and Jelani going into the game, so we felt, ‘Hey, let’s give these guys a couple shots in there.’ And we did.” The highlight play of the day for any tight end was Woods’ first-quarter touchdown. Woods found an opening up the seam, caught a finesse pass from Spencer Sanders and drug a few Iowa State defenders into the end zone. It was a 34-yard score, and that play alone would’ve made for a career high for Woods in terms of receiving yards in a game. He had 33 yards against Iowa State in 2019 and 2018. “It felt really good to get the touchdown” Woods said. “I tip my hat to Spencer because all week we’ve been hitting home on reading the defense and seeing which one’s open. Him having the quick read and then looking for me, I tip my hat off for him because I feel like he had a pretty good game.” In the game, Woods and Carter combined for six catches, 81 yards and Woods’ touchdown. Iowa State’s tight ends had seven catches for 86 yards and no scores. “It’s always good to have a competition to go against,” Woods said. “I feel like if we have a competition, it just makes you better. Just trying to outplay them in that type of thought, was really good for us as a group because we can just base ourselves where we’re at right now and how we can get better.” The post OSU’s Cowboy Backs Up to Challenge of ISU’s Tight Ends appeared first on Pistols Firing. Let’s take a look at this week’s top 25. Week 8 AP Poll
The Cowboys staying put is not such a shock when you consider that all the teams ranked above them that played this week earned Ws. OSU is still behind a 3-1 Georgia team whose only loss was two weeks ago to Alabama. Across the Big 12, Kansas State climbed from 20 to 16 after a blowout win over Kansas. Iowa State dropped to 23 after losing to OSU, and Oklahoma snuck back into the top 25 after beating TCU 33-14. After there was only one Big 12 game last weekend, the conference was back with a full slate Saturday. You can read our myriad recaps and analyses on Oklahoma State’s 24-21 win against Iowa State here, here or here. Here are recaps from every other Big 12 game this weekend. No. 20 Kansas State 55, Kansas 14It was no Skylar Thompson, no problem for Kansas State on Saturday against its state rival. The Wildcats crushed the Jayhawks, as K-State’s Phillip Brooks scored as many touchdowns off punt returns as KU scored touchdowns in the game. Brooks had 189 punt return yards and two touchdowns on four attempts. Freshman quarterback Will Howard also had a confidence-boosting day, throwing for 243 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Freshman running back Deuce Vaughn ran for 71 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and had four catches for a game-high 81 receiving yards. KU? Well, KU stinks. Oklahoma 33, TCU 14After two losses and a crazy Red River Showdown, the Sooners played their most complete game of the conference season. It was a big day for Spencer Rattler, who got benched in a portion of the Texas game. OU’s redshirt freshmen QB threw for 332 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Marvin Mims, a true freshman, caught four passes for 122 yards and both of Rattler’s TDs. The Rattler-Mims combination will be one of nightmares for Big 12 defenses moving forward. TCU still hasn’t given much work to five-star freshman running back Zach Evans. The No. 16 player in the 2020 recruiting class had just one carry for 10 yards Saturday. TCU is seventh in rushing in the Big 12 and have handed Evans the ball just four times this season. Texas 27, Baylor 16After a slew of COVID cases forced Baylor to postpone its matchup against Oklahoma State, the Bears were able to get back to it against Texas this weekend — unsuccessfully. The first half was fairly uneventful with UT taking a 13-3 lead into the break, and that’s the closest BU would be to winning. Sam Ehlinger ran for two touchdowns in the third quarter. He finished with 270 passing yards, a passing TD, an interception, 51 rushing yards and the two running scores. The Longhorns stopped scoring in the fourth quarter and it looked as if Baylor might make things interesting, but a failed fourth-down attempt with about two minutes to go iced the game. Texas Tech 34, West Virginia 27The Red Raiders got their first Big 12 win of the season Saturday, and it happened … because of their defense? Senior defensive back Zech McPhearson returned a fourth-quarter fumble 56 yards for a touchdown to break a tie at 27. The Mountaineers kept settling for field goals despite Jarrett Doege throwing for 347 yards in the game. Texas Tech quarterback Henry Colombi had an efficient outing, going 22-for-28 with 169 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 40 yards and a score. Big 12 Standings

The more interesting move among Big 12 teams, was Kansas State’s climb from 19 up three spots to 16 after a big 55-14 win over Kansas. Iowa State suffered a slight drop from 18 to 22 after the loss in Stillwater. Oklahoma also climbed back into the top 25, according to the coaches, up six spots to 24th after beating TCU 33-14.
