OSU slid from 8th to 15th in this week’s AP Top 25. The Cowboys also fell to 15 in the AFCA Coaches poll. Here’s the full AP ranking.
The Cowboys weren’t the only ranked team to have troubles. No. 7 Penn State fell to unranked Illinois, and all the way to No. 20. No. 14 Coastal Carolina slid to 24 after a loss, and No. 18 NC State and No. 25 Purdue were both knocked out of the ranking altogether. The Even Oklahoma had its troubles with Kansas on the road, but survived. Elsewhere in the Big 12, the Sooners dropped two spots after escaping Lawrence in comeback fashion and Iowa State rejoined the ranking at 22 after beating OSU. Baylor took a big step up four spots in the polls despite being on a bye week. I’ve pounded my fist on the table for Mike Gundy and the coaching staff amid some struggles (particularly on offense) and I’ve graded on a scale for the most part all season because … well … OSU has been winning. That is no longer the case after OSU took a 24-21 loss to Iowa State on Saturday and, therefore, I’m no longer grading on a scale. As such, the report card is as ugly as it has been all season. Let’s get right to it. Coaching: C-Mike Gundy emphasizes the importance often of putting his players in position to succeed. For the most part, I think he did that Saturday, so I can’t flunk him here. If OSU’s two attempted field goals — both missed — were instead both makes, then perhaps they escape with a win. That said, the kicking attempts were a few moments that probably won’t be on the top of Gundy’s Hall of Fame resume. The 50-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter was chief among them. Kicking a field goal on 4th and inches from 32 yards later in the game was another. I’m firmly on Team Never Kick, but in those spots it made more sense to go for it (and especially in hindsight). Play-calling wasn’t great, either, and the offense really never got enough momentum to really take the game and ice it. That’s in part a credit to Iowa State’s defense — it’s really good — but also somewhat damning of OSU’s offense, which all season has been unreliable. Mustering just 21 points on the road against a borderline top-25 isn’t going to be enough for a win in the Big 12 on most occasions and that was the case Saturday. It has to improve for OSU to have a shot at winning the league. Defense: AWhat do we even say? OSU’s defense is great. Give Jim Knowles a five-year rolling contract and a box of cigars. This man has transformed the defense in a way no one really thought possible even a few years ago. They held ISU star Breece Hall to 70 yards rushing on 21 attempts and limited the team to 24 points — obviously not quite low enough to win but 18.3 points below its season scoring average. The defense held up its end of the bargain. Officiating: FThe officiating was bad. At least it was bad for both teams, I guess? In one particular example, the officials deemed an Iowa State WR committed unsportsmanlike conduct for high-stepping to a touchdown and took the touchdown off the board. It’s technically OK in the rulebook, but … felt pretty gross. Then, of course, the fourth down play called short for OSU late that effectively ended the game was pretty bad, too. It looked pretty evident that OSU got the yardage necessary to move the chains but the official ruling was that it was short, and only one camera angle was available. In 2021! It was a really poor day to be a Big 12 official. QB play: BTay Martin made the biggest play of the day for the OSU offense Saturday as he hauled in a 25-yard pass from Spencer Sanders and holy smokes was it a dart by QB1. He dropped it in perfectly in just a spot where only his man could get it and positioned precisely where it needed to be. He didn’t put up mega numbers — he was 15-of-24 passing for 225 yards and three scores — but he did not commit a turnover and made key plays early in the game, especially with his legs, to lead OSU’s offense. Thought despite the win and some struggles on offense he played pretty well. Gritty performance and something for him and the offense to build off of. Third quarter: FI don’t understand this at all — like, at all — but OSU has put a total of three (3!) points on the scoreboard in the third quarter all season. In seven games. Three points! On the season it is being outscored 44-3 in the third quarter. The weird thing is that I think for the most part this coaching staff has done really well in making in-game adjustments and executing on gameplans — I mean, it attempted 13 passes on the road against Boise State and still won — but it does seem like some of those halftime adjustments it should be making are not being made quickly enough. If OSU is just going to flail in the third quarter and try to fight back in the fourth quarters it’s going to play a lot more close games and find itself on the wrong side more frequently than it has this season. The loss, a first since the penultimate regular season game last season, snaps what was the third-longest winning streak in the nation and, in the process, ends its winning streak over ISU in Ames at four games — the last L coming in 2011. Yes, that 2011 game. Here are 10 things to know after the game. 1. OSU has scored 3 points in the third quarter all season long (in seven games). It was held scoreless against Iowa State in the third quarter Saturday while ISU scored 10 third-quarter points to take the lead into the fourth quarter. 2. Spencer Sanders set a season-high with three touchdown passes in the losing effort. He finished the game 15-of-24 passing for 225 yards. It was the most passing touchdowns in a game for him since throwing four in a win over Miami in the 2020 Cheez It Bowl. 3. Brennan Presley set season-highs in receptions (six), receiving yards (84) and receiving touchdowns (two). It was his first mult-touchdown outing of the season. 4. OSU is 30-11 in its last 41 games decided by 10 or fewer points. 5. Jaylen Warren was held to 76 yards rushing on 18 attempts. It was his fewest rushing attempts in a game since Sept. 11 against Tulsa when he rushed 14 times for 37 yards, and the first time since that game he was held to below 100 yards on the ground. 6. Malcolm Rodriguez entered the game ranked eighth in the FBS with 10.0 tackles per game and was the FBS leader with 34 games with six or more tackles since 2018. Against Iowa State, he logged his 14th career game with a double-digit tackle total by recording 13. He has recorded at least six tackles in 12 straight games. (Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, anyone?) 7. The loss to Iowa State was OSU’s sixth since in its last 41 instances in which it failed to convert a halftime lead into a win, dating back to Sept. 17, 2016. 8. Iowa State receiver Xavier Hutchinson recorded a career-high 12 receptions and added 125 yards receiving which were the second-most for him of his career. It’s the second multi-score game for him this season and second of his career. He accounted for 13 targets of Brock Purdy’s 33 pass attempts. 9. Iowa State running back Breece Hall entered the game averaging 124.7 rushing yards per game. Oklahoma State’s defense limited him to 70 on 21 carries. He also added two receptions for 37 yards. 10. Iowa State entered the game averaging 42.3 points and 488.5 yards of total offense in its last four games. The Cowboys held the Cyclones to 24 points and 374 yards. In its three games prior to playing Oklahoma State, Iowa State rushed for 216 yards against Baylor, 290 against Kansas and 210 against Kansas State. Against the Cowboys, the Cyclones had 67. I’ve already written the game recap and the social reaction. Below is my running notebook of the game that was. • FOX just showed a graphic that OSU’s defense has 458 games played. That’s incredible. • On the first play from scrimmage, Brock Purdy finds Charlie Kolar for 34 yards to put the Cyclones into Cowboy territory. ‘Clones showed up early. (What could have been with Charlie Kolar, by the way. He’d have been a great Poke.) • And so did the Cowboy defense. OSU holds and turns over Iowa State on downs. Sean Michael Flanagan was voted as team captain this week and he shows out early. • OSU’s first drive stalls out with after Spencer Sanders seems to get lost on third down on a play action. Sanders 0-for-2 through the air, but Tom Hutton boots one and pins the Cyclones at their own 7. • The Pokes force a three-and-out deep in ISU territory. A short punt and OSU gets the ball in enemy territory. • Spencer Sanders and Jaylen Warren both making plays with their legs early. • And Sanders finds Brennan Presley for a sweet lay-out into the end zone on play action. That was No. 3’s first pass completion of the day. OSU takes advantage of that short field. SCORE: Cowboys 7, Cyclones 0 | 1st QUARTER 5:55• Devin Harper put the Cyclones behind the chains, shooting into the backfield and sacking Brock Purdy for a big loss. OSU forces back-to-back three-and-outs. • Brennan Presley goes backwards on that punt, which pads the total. 54 yards with the last yardage. OSU to start on its 26. • Jaylen Warren is the type of running back you can depend on. • Another interesting stat FOX brought up: Iowa State is 15-2 in October since 2017 and both of those losses came to OSU. • Is this the Brennan Presley Game?! I think it might be. Back-to-back big plays from the speedy sophomore. END OF 1ST: Cowboys 7, Cyclones 0Sanders: 3-for-6 for 34 yards, 1 TD • OSU stalls in Cyclone territory and the Cowboys come up empty. Tanner Brown misses wide right on a 50-yard field goal attempt. Feels like a pretty big missed opportunity. • Iowa State moving the ball much better on this drive, but it’s been all through the air and mostly thanks to that Purdy-Kolar connection. • Brock Purdy was this close to getting in on a keeper but his elbow was short. Then Breece Hall gets stood up at the line by Malcolm Rodriguez. • Then Brendon Evers forces a fourth down attempt with this big stop. • Cyclones made it in with the pass. OSU’s defense was on the field for over nine and half minutes. Hopefully the offense can sustain a drive and give them a breather. SCORE: Cowboys 7, Cyclones 7 | 2nd QUARTER 4:39• And on that note, OSU gets way behind the chains on one play. Warren gets bottled up for a short loss and Hunter Anthony gets flagged for a chop block. Sanders takes a shot on second-and-21 but missed a wide open Tay Martin. Penalty makes for OSU’s first three-and-out. Defense only got two minutes of game time on the bench but there’s just two and half until halftime. • Collin Oliver comes up with a huge sack on third down. Defense gets off the field in just 43 seconds forcing third three-and-out. • On the two-minute drill: Sander finds Martin for 25 (could have been more with a little more English on it). • This is THE BRENNAN PRESLEY GAME. SCORE: Cowboys 14, Cyclones 7 | 2nd QUARTER 0:59• And the Cowboys defense gets off the field again. Fourth three-and-out forced and that drives only lasted 25 seconds. • Cowboys take a knee and a touchdown lead into the half. OSU will get the ball back to start the third. HALF: Cowboys 14, Cyclones 7• After a nice return to start at the 32, the Cowboys stall on their first possession for their second three-and-out of the game. • Breece Hall breaks loose for a big run and the Cyclones are cooking a bit. • And just like that we’re tied. Purdy finds Xavier Hutchinson for a 54-yard touchdown. • And somehow that TD got nullified by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. That was a stretch of a call. Pretty weak.
• Didn’t matter. Hutchinson finds the end zone again and we’re tied up. OSU needs to figure out how to sustain an offensive drive. SCORE: Cowboys 14, Cyclones 14 | 3rd QUARTER 10:21• Nice couple of plays by Sanders to start this drive: Passes of 22 and 13 yards to Rashod Owens and Blaine Green. Then Tay Martin got tackled down the field for a PI to move the chains. Looks like Martin would’ve scored. • Tanner Brown just missed another field goal. That’s two missed FGs. In Ames, by an undefeated OSU kicker. • Cyclones march right down the field, themselves aided by TWO defensive PI calls. Both were a bit weak but both look like they could have been avoided and were also unnecessary. • OSU does well to force the field goal after ISU makes it to the 12. SCORE: Cowboys 14, Cyclones 17 | 3rd QUARTER 2:41• I’m just happy we made this far into the game before highlights from the 2011 game. • Jaylen Warren got stuffed on third-and-1. But there was a reason. ISU had 12 men on the field. OSU avoids another three-and-out. What are they going to do about it? • Nada. Sanders tackled for loss, then throws Presley short. Then he had no chance on third-and-long. END OF THIRD: Cowboys 14, Cyclones 17• OSU continues to not be a third quarter team. ![]() • OSU is a fourth quarter team.
SCORE: Cowboys 21, Cyclones 17 | 4th QUARTER 8:36• But the Cyclones are not giving up just yet. Big plays by Breece Hall, Hutchinson and Tarique Milton put ISU at first-and-goal on the OSU 4. • Hall finds the end zone to put the ‘Clones back in the lead. SCORE: Cowboys 21, Cyclones 24 | 4th QUARTER 5:29• Cowboys down 3 with five and a half left. OSU is 0-2 on field goals on the day and they’re trying to stay undefeated in Ames. Nothing to see here. • OSU is now 2-of-10 on third down and 0-for-5 in the second half. That’s the Cowboys’ worst third-down conversion rate since 2019, in a win over Iowa State. • Brennan Presley was this close to getting that fourth-down conversion. And it will be reviewed. • Nothing doing. Not enough evidence to overturn and that will do it for the Cowboys’ undefeated season. FINAL: Cowboys 21, Cyclones 24• That controversial spot will be the talking on your radios this week, but OSU has not been able to put together two halves of offense all year. And when the Cowboys’ defense finally needed it to, they couldn’t sustain drives. • OSU went 0-for-2 from field goal in Ames and lost by 3. •Next up, Homecoming and a Kansas squad that gave OU all it could handle. The post Notebook: Pokes Defense Shows Up vs. ISU, Offense Shows Flashes But Stalls Late appeared first on Pistols Firing. ![]() Read this original article at Pistols Firing Blog. ![]() The Cowboys have played with fire all season and, wouldn’t you know it, they finally got burned in Ames. Here’s the best (and worst) to come across my timeline during the Cowboys’ loss to Iowa State. Before we get to the negative, what a game by Brennan Presley.
Plenty of praise for Jim Knowles’ group early.
Tanner Brown missed both of this first two FG attempts.
Of course this one came down to a controversial review play.
The post Social Media Reaction to OSU’s Loss in Ames Includes Love for Defense, Presley appeared first on Pistols Firing. ![]() Read this original article at Pistols Firing Blog. ![]() Trailing 24-21 in a hostile environment, Oklahoma State on Saturday needed two yards on fourth down with just under 90 seconds remaining to keep its drive — and perfect season — alive. It got roughly one yard and 2.99 feet instead. From the ISU 42-yard line, Spencer Sanders hit Brennan Presley for a quick bubble screen to try and pop him open and into space to gather the yardage. He scrapped his way nearly there and was dragged by offensive lineman Josh Sills to what could reasonably have been considered first-down yardage by the naked eye. But the call on the field was that he was short. And, alas, a review was conducted and there was not enough evidence to overturn the initial ruling. “Is he on the body? That’s what it looks like. But does he fall far enough forward? I just don’t think there’s enough to be changed,” said FOX rules analyst Mike Pereira reviewing the play. “You have to assume that the play on the field is correct, so it’s got to be indisputable that it’s not. And it is very close. . . “ Moments later the officiating crew announced that the “ruling on the field stands,” meaning they could not confirm the initial spot but also did not have enough video evidence to change the spot. “It just was such that you couldn’t overturn it,” added Pereira. The play happened with 1:09 remaining in regulation and Iowa State was able to take two kneels to end the game.
Had the ruling on the field been a first down instead of ruling Presley just short, it probably would have stood. It was that close. It’s hard to definitively make the case that the initial ruling was right or wrong but it certainly appeared as if Sills dragging Presley forward got him to first-down yardage. Here’s another angle for posterity with a word of caution: This may cause pain in your heart area and possible tears in the eyes. I mean, he’s definitely got the first down, right?
OSU had plenty of opportunities to win the game so it’s not as if the game can be pinned on one play, but for OSU it has to be tough knowing it was this close to potentially pulling out another come-from-behind win as an underdog. Instead, it will move to Week 8 with a 6-1 record with Kansas — a team that narrowly lost to OU on Saturday — on deck next week back home in Stillwater.
