Before OSU takes the field Saturday for a primetime matchup with TCU, the program will unveil a statue of the legend, Barry Sanders, at 5 p.m. on the Northwest side of Boone Pickens Stadium. The ceremony — to take place two hours before kick — is free and open to the public. Sanders at halftime will also be inducted into the Cowboy Ring of Honor. He will be the second former player — along with former teammate Thurman Thomas — to be inducted into the Ring of Honor. Sanders’ statue is approximately nine feet tall and made out of bronze. He joins an illustrious group of former OSU figures to have a statue on the campus joining former president Henry Bennett, OSU’s first African-American student, Nancy Randolph Davis and benefactor Boone Pickens. It’s a long time coming for the GOAT to have his own statue on the campus and to be inducted into the Ring of Honor. He had arguably the greatest college football season of all time in his 1988 Heisman campaign where he rushed for 237.5 yards per game and scored 44 times. STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football team rounded out the top-10 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll, which were released Sunday morning. STILLWATER - A statue of Barry Sanders will be unveiled outside the northwest corner of Boone Pickens Stadium two hours prior to Oklahoma State's football game against TCU on Nov. 13. The unveiling ceremony is free and open to the public. The Cowboys just keep on winning, and have earned their last two victories in dominant fashion keeping both Kansas and West Virginia out of the end zone. But OSU’s latest convincing road win in Morgantown only allowed an incremental climb, albeit into the Top 10, in this week’s AFCA Coaches poll. OSU moved from No. 11 to 10. Here’s a look at the complete ranking.
An upset Saturday saw No. 6 Michigan State fall to unranked Purdue and No. 9 Wake Forest fall to unranked North Carolina. No. 2 Cincinnati looked vulnerable in a close win over Tulsa. All dropped, though Michigan State only fell to nine. Baylor dropped five spots to 18 after getting upset by TCU. Alabama, on the other hand, failed to dominate a .500 LSU team. The Tide did move up a spot though. It just means more. The Cowboys debuted at No. 11 in last week’s College Football Playoff ranking AKA, the only one that matters. It will be interesting to see how the committee views some of those subpar performances above the Pokes come Tuesday night, and how that Top 25 compares to the Coaches and AP this week. West Virginia was an underdog by only 3.5 points on its own turf Saturday against Oklahoma State. It proceeded to lose by 21 points in a game the Cowboys and their defense dominated from opening kick to final snap. The win moved OSU to 8-1 on the season and kept it in the mix for the Big 12 title. So, after the smoke has cleared from the day that was, here are 10 things to know about the game from nuggets on the OSU defense’s dominance to big picture season success and more. 1. OSU’s defense allowed only 133 yards of offense against West Virginia on Saturday. It is the fewest yards allowed by an OSU defense since 2000. (My gosh, West Virginia, not a good category to be in alongside Savannah State and the 2012 massacre.)
2. OSU has allowed only 3 points in consecutive wins over Kansas and West Virginia, marking the first time since the final game of 1974 and the first game of 1975 it has held consecutive opponents without a touchdown. It’s the first time since 1949 it held conference opponents without a touchdown in consecutive games. 3. OSU’s eight sacks against West Virginia set a new season high and was the second-most in a game in school history (and most in a game since 2004). It matched the highest sack total against any Power Five team in a game this season. (Jarret Doege is nodding along from an ice bath somewhere in Morgantown right now.) 4. West Virginia was held to 2-of-14 on attempted third down conversions. Last week, Kansas was 0-of-13 on attempted third down conversions. 5. OSU has won 77 consecutive games when holding its opponent to fewer than 20 points, dating back to Sept. 13, 2003 – the longest active stretch of time in the FBS and longest since at least 1980. 6. Look at this. Somebody elect Jim Knowles for president immediately, if not sooner. 7. The win Saturday made OSU 8-1 or better for the first time since 2015 and for the fifth time in the Mike Gundy era. 8. OSU’s winning streak over West Virginia improved to seven with the win Saturday. It has won four-straight in Morgantown. 9. OSU’s defense has allowed fewer than 100 yards of offense in a half in seven of its past eight games. The Cowboys limited Baylor to 99 yards in the first, Tulsa to 89 yards in the first, Boise State to 64 yards in the second, K- State to 84 yards in the second, Texas to 92 yards in the second, Kansas to 49 yards in the first and 94 yards in the second and West Virginia to 61 in the first and 72 in the second. 10. West Virginia through three quarters of play was held to just one yard (!!!!!) rushing. It finished the game with 33 rushing attempts for 17 yards rushing. Oklahoma State’s showdown with TCU on Nov. 13 will have the whole town buzzin’. On top of it potentially being one step closer to a Big 12 title appearance for the now 8-1 Pokes, the game — during which Barry Sanders will be inducted into the OSU Ring of Honor — will be played in primetime with a kickoff slated for 7 p.m. FOX will carry the game. OSU to bring in the big game is planning to Blackout BPS as part of its tribute to Barry Sanders and as part of a celebration for its penultimate home game of the 2021 season. It will almost certainly be a sold-out crowd after OSU on Saturday dominated West Virginia on the road to improve to 8-1 on the season with TCU, Texas Tech and OU left on the schedule. The TCU game will be OSU’s sixth this season played in a primetime slot. The Pokes are 5-0 in their previous primetime appearances with wins over Missouri State, Boise State, Kansas State, Baylor and Kansas.
