![]() No. 9 Oklahoma State’s defense pitched its first shut out in nine years and its first of a Power 5 team in 26 years. The Cowboys (10-1) did just enough on offense and leaned on its defense for a 23-0 win over Texas Tech. The Cowboys are headed to a formal Big 12 championship game for the first time in school history. Before we get to the recap, a quick nod to our sponsors over at The Price Land Team at Fathom Realty. Oklahoma State showed up in Lubbock needing a win secure their ticket to the Cowboys pitched a shutout. The Red Raiders were intent on stopping OSU’s lethal ground game from the start, and it mostly worked — at the start. A week after a monster 447-yard, eight-TD rushing performance last week OSU gained just 60 rushing yards in the first half and averaged just 3.2 yards per carry. But it gave Spencer Sanders and Co. a chance. Before halftime, the Pokes racked up 176 yards in the air and had a number of big passing plays. Spencer Sanders found Tay Martin for plays of 38 and 35 yards in the first two quarters. The defense was nearly flawless in Tortilla Town. OSU allowed just 108 total yards and limited the home team to 1.9 yards per play. OSU has not allowed a touchdown in 15 of the last 16 quarters. OSU created 16 negative plays and logged four sacks. Missed opportunities and head-scratching penalties hampered the Cowboys from running away with this thing by the third quarter. OSU scored on five of six red zone trips, but settled for field goals on three of them. Sanders threw for 239 yards and a touchdown, finishing 19 of his 38 pass attempts. He also kept it six times for 48 yards and another score. Dominic Richardson has been the Cowboys’ leading rusher in consecutive games. He carried it 20 times for 84 yards. Jaylen Warren took 12 handoffs for 37 yards. Tay Martin hauled in seven catches for 130 yards and John Paul Richardson was active, grabbing six passes out of the air for 41 yards and a touchdown. Blaine Green added three for 46. Devin Harper led the Cowboys with five total tackles, a half sack and half tackle for loss. Brock Martin led the Cowboys with 1.5 sacks and shared a tie with Jason Taylor II and Brendon Evers with two TFLs. Next up, the Cowboys head home for Bedlam Pt. 1 before a possible rematch in Arlington a week later. This is the same combination OSU wore at Kansas State last year when the Cursive Cowboys helmet was first debuted. OSU has also worn an orange version against Baylor last year and against West Virginia two games ago. The Cowboys are undefeated in Cursive. OSU is 6-4 all-time in all-white. The Sooners on Saturday outlasted Iowa State, 28-21, making OSU’s path to a Big 12 title appearance simple. An ISU win would have complicated matters but now all OSU needs is a win either Saturday in Lubbock or next Saturday against OU in Stillwater. Win and you’re in. The No. 9 Cowboys got some help Saturday for their long shot hopes to make the playoff, too, with No. 7 Michigan State getting thrashed by Ohio State. Win out, and things get really interesting. But one step at a time. The OU win sets the Pokes up to clinch an appearance in the conference title game. Regardless of the Tech game result, it should only elevate the attention Bedlam will attract next week in the regular season finale. But before the Cowboys make reservations for Dec. 4, they’ll need to get through a Texas Tech team that, despite a mid-year coaching change, is bowl eligible for the first time in four years and is fresh off a big upset. In order to get past those Red Raiders, the Cowboys will have to win in one — or mostly likely more — of these three key matchups. 1. Donovan Smith vs. OSU’s SecondaryFor the second-straight week, the Cowboys will be facing a quarterback in just his second career start. Last week it was TCU’s Chandler Morris; this week it’s Texas Tech’s Donovan Smith. Tanner McCalister, one of OSU’s veteran DBs, talked about the challenge of defending back-to-back fresh quarterbacks. “We kept getting to that last week against TCU with (Chandler) Morris,” said McCalister. “When you don’t have a lot of film, it kind of stands true, because whatever he puts on film, that’s kind of how you’re going to play. But, the one tricky thing is, we don’t know how their coaches have prepared for our defense.” The Cowboys bottled up Morris for 125 yards and no scores one week after a 461-yard, three total touchdown performance in an upset over Baylor. He completed just 55 percent of his passes against OSU after completing 70 percent against the Bears. McCalister credited Jim Knowles for his ability to adjust and OSU’s defense for its aggressiveness. The Cowboys face a similar feat against an even more imposing phenom in Smith. In an upset over Iowa State, Smith completed 78 percent of his passes for 322 yards and three scores through the air. At 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, Smith is hard to bring down. He picked up 50 yards on the ground against the Cyclones. It’s that seasoned secondary that allows OSU’s front seven to pin its ears back and feast on opposing backfields. OSU is tied for the lead in the nation in sacks, having given Morris and West Virginia’s Jarret Doege the paper-or-plastic treatment 15 times in the last two games. The latter is the Big 12’s passing leader; OSU held him to a season low. 2. Jaylen Warren vs. Tech’s Rebounding Defensive FrontOnly six FBS teams have held opponents to less than 100 yards rushing in seven games this season: Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, San Diego State, Wisconsin and Texas Tech. Only the last two have done so in three-straight contests coming in. But, Jaylen Warren; And Dominic Richardson; And Dez Jackson; And Jaden Nixon; And OSU’s late-gelling O-line. The Cowboys have only failed to reach 100 yards on the ground once — and that was against an FCS team in the opener — and have really found their groove in the ground game as of late. That stout and stacked RB stable, and OSU’s front line, are brimming with confidence after a dominant 447 rushing yards and eight (!) rushing touchdowns against TCU. The recipe for OSU’s success is simple, but not easy to stop. As long as OSU’s ground game can chew up yards and minutes, its defense can continue to lock teams down. With a little support from the passing game, the Cowboys are tough to beat. Which leads us to… 3. Spencer Sanders vs. Tech’s SecondarySpencer Sanders had one of the worst games of his career the last time OSU went to Lubbock. Here’s why I think he could be set up for one of his best on Saturday night. As tough as the Red Raiders have been to run against, they’re giving up a lot of big plays through the air. Texas Tech ranks T-116th in passing defense nationally (last in the Big 12) and has allowed 377 yards per game during those aforementioned last three, as well as 11 passing TDs to just two INTs. The Red Raiders also have shown a propensity to get beat deep, ranking eighth in the conference in opponent passing over 10 yards (99) and ninth in plays allowed over 20 (37). For reference, OSU leads the league in the former (63) and is T-2nd in the latter (27). QB1 is playing the best ball of his career over the second half of the season. In Weeks 1-6, Sanders logged a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 7:5. In the four games since, it’s been 8:1. During that span he is averaging career highs in completion percentage (66%) and passer rating (158.09). Coinciding with that uptick in performance and productivity, Sanders’ once depleted receiving corps has gotten healthy and those younger receivers that saw early snaps look to be the better for it. OSU doesn’t need to throw for 400 yards to beat anybody. But with plenty of playmakers to hit like Tay Martin, Brennan Presley and myriad dynamic youngsters, Sanders might do it anyway. No. 3 just needs to continue playing controlled, complimentary football and making teams pay for leaving his dudes one-on-one. A team like Tech should give him the perfect opportunity to do both. Here are three things to watch for on the dual. 1. Do the Cowboys wrestle Carter Young?Dusty Hone got the start and win vs. Stanford last week at 141, but freshman Carter Young has beaten him in a few of their wrestle-off matches so far. A lot of people are wondering if Young will get the start this weekend and there are some signs pointing to that happening.
Will they pull it on Saturday and wrestle Young? How will he do if they wrestle him here? It will all be interesting to watch. I’m told it’s almost certain that Young will have his redshirt pulled and get the start here. 2. Wyatt Sheets vs. Brayton LeeI like this matchup a lot. You have Sheets, who became an All-American last year with an injured knee, and Lee, who finished a few spots ahead of Sheets at the tournament last year at sixth place. Is a healthy Sheets ready to jump Lee and move up the NCAA podium a bit? This will be a fun match to watch. 3. An Olympic Gold MedalistHe’s not on the Cowboys’ side, but it’s not every day you get to watch an Olympic Gold Medalist that’s still competing in college.
Gable Steveson will be wrestling this weekend and is likely to face Luke Surber, who got the start for the Cowboys last Saturday vs. Stanford after reportedly winning wrestle-offs with Austin Harris and Konner Doucet. It’s a tough way to take on your second ever match as a starter, but any time you get to see an Olympic Gold Medalist compete in college is a unique opportunity. This all goes down Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST on the Big Ten Network. Team LeadersPassing: Rushing: Receiving: Tackling: Sacks: Series HistoryThese programs have played each other 48 times with the Red Raiders boasting a narrow 23-22-3 series lead. With that said, it’s been mostly OSU as of late, as the Cowboys have won 10 of the past 12 meetings. Tech shut out OSU in the teams’ first two meetings (1935 and 1936), winning a combined 26-0. OSU got closer in 1940, tying with Tech at 6 in a game in Oklahoma City. OSU’s first win in the series came in 1942 in Lubbock, winning 9-6. That started a four game winning streak for OSU in the series. This series has also gone international, as the teams met in Tokyo, Japan in 1988, shortly after Barry Sanders won the Heisman Trophy. OSU won that game 45-42. Here are how the past 10 meetings have shaken out:

Del City defensive lineman Jaedon Foreman announced his commitment to Oklahoma State on Friday. Foreman also held an offer from Memphis and had interest from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, TCU, SMU and Kansas State.
The Class of 2023 rankings aren’t all that expansive yet (the 2022 early signing period hasn’t even started), and thus Foreman is unranked for now. The 247Sports composite rankings only list 503 prospects at the time of Foreman’s commitment, but he should be ranked soon. Listed at 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, Foreman plays all along the defensive line for the Eagles, and he also plays on the Del City basketball team. Behind a few high-level defensive prospects, Foreman included, Del City went 9-2 in 2021, finishing 7-0 in 6A-II’s District 1. Oklahoma State extended an offer to Foreman in June, and he has made it to campus on multiple occasions since. OSU has offers out to a few of Foreman’s teammates as well. Class of 2023 safety Kanijal Thomas has offers from OSU, Iowa State, Texas Tech and others. Meanwhile, Class of 2024 defensive lineman David Stone already has offers from OSU, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Texas A&M and others. Foreman isn’t the first defender the Cowboys have grabbed from Del City either. Linebacker Donovan Stephens joined the Cowboys as part of the 2021 class and is a freshman in Stillwater this season.
