Usually Cowboy football players stand out in a crowd because of how bright the orange is that they are wearing. Although their dark polos didn’t stand out too much at Big 12 Media Days, some of the Cowboys’ accessories did catch some eyeballs.
Linebacker Nick Martin wore a pair of 90s-esque baggy jeans and some wolf slippers to Las Vegas. Quarterback Alan Bowman debuted a mustache. Collin Oliver and Ollie Gordon weren’t wearing anything as noticeable, but they each had their own style, too, with Gordon wearing some custom OSU shoes and Oliver going with the classic slacks look.
“The way I see it, we all get to be ourselves when we come here,” Oliver said. “That’s thanks to the head man — Coach Gundy. Being able to come here, whether it’s shoes — I wore slacks because I really like slacks. I could’ve wore cowboy boots, but I used all mine up for Calf Fry, man. …
“Being able to come here and be ourselves, it’s a really cool thing.”
Martin said he has always been into fashion and has even started on a fashion line. He said he is about ready to start meeting with manufacturers.
He burst onto the scene last season in his first year as a starter, finishing with All-Big 12 honors after leading the league with 140 total tackles — that’s 25 more tackles than second place. So, you could say atop the Big 12 tackle leaderboard, Martin has something in common with those slippers: he’s a lone wolf.
“I thought they were some dope slippers,” Martin said. “I got like 10 different pairs. I wear them all the time. I think I went like two weeks without wearing shoes, for real. I was cool with it. I thought they were cool.”
Entering his seventh year of college football, Bowman led the Cowboys to the Big 12 title game last season in his first year with the program, throwing for 3,460 yards and 15 touchdowns on the year even after being a part of a three-man rotation in the first three games.
On top of changing his look, Bowman said he hopes his new orange mustache can be used for good in Year 2 in American’s Brightest Orange.
“Something different I wanted to do this year,” Bowman said. “We still have some things in the work with some NIL. We’re gonna try to like partner with a beard club or Manscaped or something — some type of beard and then also to partner with a foundation for every touchdown thrown will go toward something good, as well. Hopefully it’s gonna be something for good, something partnered, something business-wise.
“And fun. I would love to see mustaches in the stadium. Something cute and funny that we could do but also has a good meaning towards the end. Something fun, something different, why not? And it’s freaking orange. We’re the Cowboys. Why not?”
