U.S. Senior Nationals was this weekend, and there were two former Cowboys competing.
Two-time 141-pound NCAA champ Dean Heil and NCAA heavyweight runner-up Derek White wrestled at 65 kg and 125 kg, respectively.
Heil came in as the No. 6 seed, but with a few wins over the top seed to his resume, Heil was viewed as a potential dark horse here. It didn’t play out that way for him.
Heil started off nicely with a 10-0 tech fall then followed that up with a 3-1 win over RTC teammate Cody Trybus. He then ran into Rob Mathers, who was the early talk of the tournament after teching Luke Pletcher. He followed that up by running through Heil with a 10-0 tech in the first period.
In his first match on the consolation side, Heil took on Kevon Davenport and fell 9-1 ending his tournament run.
Derek White came in as the No. 9 seed at 125 kg and was sporting a mane of hair and goatee that made him look like the Big Lebowski.
He started off with a 4-2 win in the first round over Cale Davidson then stepped out against No. 8 seed Daniel Chaid in a pretty crucial bracket positioning match for the pair. White fell 6-2 to Chaid, dropping him to the consolation side. A win for White here would have put him against the No. 1 seed in the next round, but would have set him up against lower seeds through to the consolation semifinals of the tournament and made the placement path a bit easier.
White picked up two wins on the consolation side after his loss, including a 2-2 victory on criteria over OU heavyweight Josh Heindselman, but eventually ran into No. 3 seed Youssif Hemida and fell 3-0 ending his tournament one match away from the placement rounds.
