Gunnar Gundy has his landing spot heading into the 2024 season: Emporia State.
Gundy appeared on Emporia State’s roster this week, listed as a 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior. He is the son of Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and spent three seasons with the Cowboys.
Gunnar entered the portal ahead of OSU’s Texas Bowl game against Texas A&M, staying with the team during that time to compete in the game. He initially committed to Ohio via the portal before reentering the portal in late January.
Out of Stillwater High School, Gunnar was a part of the 2020 recruiting class but turned down offers to Eastern Michigan and Toledo to join the Cowboys ahead of the 2021 season. He redshirted that year, as the Pokes went on to win the Fiesta Bowl. With Spencer Sanders suffering an injury, Gunnar and Garret Rangel were thrown into the fire in 2022. Gunnar played in four games, completing 49% of his 39 pass attempts for 247 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions.
Gunnar was then a part of the Cowboys’ three-quarterback rotation to start the 2023 season. He completed 62% of his passes this past season for 202 yards and a score. He also had a rushing touchdown in OSU’s Texas Bowl win against Texas A&M.
The Hornets are a Division-II squad in Emporia, Kansas. Garin Higgins is the head coach, and he has been with the Hornets since 2007. Emporia State went 9-3 last season — beating Southern Nazarene 55-24 in the Fun Town RV Heritage Bowl. The Hornets play in the MIAA and were picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches poll.
Braden Gleason quarterbacked the Hornets last season and is now on staff as a graduate assistant. He threw for a ridiculous 4,178 yards and 47 touchdowns in 2023. According to KSNT in Topeka, Gundy is expected to compete with two quarterbacks to earn the Hornets’ starting gig.
