The Cowboys were practicing for Baylor on Sunday afternoon, but now their attention shifts to another bye week and Iowa State.
Oklahoma State’s game against Baylor, which was supposed to be Saturday, was postponed after Baylor had a COVID-19 outbreak. It forces the Pokes into a consecutive off week before hosting a Cyclone team that hasn’t lost in conference play.
“Nothing surprises us anymore with this year,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said on the Big 12 teleconference Monday morning. “You just kinda roll with the punches. When we started this, we felt like we would run into a game or two where there could be COVID issues on our team or another team. We’ve been working on Baylor for a week. You take that and put that in the filing cabinet, and you open up Iowa State.”
Gundy said he isn’t concerned with the stop-start nature of this past week because it is something his team has dealt with for a majority of the offseason and even earlier in the season.
The Cowboys’ opener was pushed back from Sept. 12 to Sept. 19 to allow Tulsa ample time to practice after COVID stoppages in the Golden Hurricane’s fall camp.
“The only option we have is to control what we can control, which is when they tell us we get to play the next game and move forward,” Gundy said. “The mental approach with the team has to be preparation and get ready for the next game. Can’t do anything about the Baylor game — it’s over with. We just gotta move forward.”
OSU has quickly made the move to Big 12 favorite this year, being the only unbeaten team in the league. Ranked No. 7 in both polls, the Cowboys are also ranked well above other conference teams. Iowa State is the next highest ranked at 20.
Oklahoma and Texas were considered the Big 12 favorites entering the season, but both have two losses in their first three conference games. It sets OSU in a position control its own fate with a tough stretch of games upcoming, whenever that stretch of games actually happens.
“For some of us, you control your own destiny,” Gundy said. “You keep winning, you give yourself a chance. You get knocked off, and then you have to end up hoping that somebody beats somebody down the road. You’d just like to try to win the ones you have and let the chips fall where they fall.”
