Another all-time great Cowboy will be immortalized at Boone Pickens Stadium. Former Oklahoma State defensive end Leslie O’Neal will join the Cowboy Ring of Honor in 2024, OSU announced Monday.
O’Neal was a two-time All-Amercian at OSU, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2020 and his 34 career sacks is still a program record. In 1984, he also set a record that still stands with 16 sacks for 118 yards lost, which helped him earn Big Eight Defensive Player of the Year.
After being drafted eighth overall by the San Diego Chargers, O’Neal won AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, but that was just a springboard. In 13 seasons, he was named a Pro Bowler six times and earned three All-Pro second-team selections. He still ranks 14th in career sacks in the NFL (since 1982) with 132.5.
He is on a list of eight Cowboys to also be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, which includes Lynn “Pappy” Waldorf (Class of 1966), Bob Fenimore (1972), Barry Sanders (2003), Thurman Thomas (2008), coach Jimmy Johnson (2012), Terry Miller (2022) and Justin Blackmon, who will be inducted in 2024.
O’Neal is the fifth addition to the Cowboy Ring of Honor, joining Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders, Bob Fenimore and Terry Miller, who was inducted during the 2023 season. O’Neal’s ceremony will take place Sept. 7, when OSU hosts Arkansas.
