OSU softball staged a dramatic comeback on Sunday to avoid a run rule, scoring six runs in the third inning after trailing 9-1 entering the bottom half of the inning. But the Cowgirls’ comeback bid ultimately fell flat against the top-ranked Sooners, as OU won 11-8 to claim the best-of-three Bedlam series and the Big 12 regular season championship.
“Tough game. Disappointed. We just rolled over in that second [inning] and gave up all those unearned runs,” said OSU coach Kenny Gajewski. “It was the difference in this game.”
Cowgirl ace Carrie Eberle got the start in the circle for the Cowgirls and pitched five innings, striking out two Sooners in the loss and surrendering zero earned runs. Logan Simunek provided relief out of the bullpen, pitching two innings and striking out two more. She surrendered zero runs in the, but OSU was unable to provide run support as the 11-8 tally going to the top of the sixth held to the final pitch.
“Felt like we outplayed them, to be very honest,” Gajewski said. “But when you make four errors and give up six or seven unearned runs, it hurts.”
OSU scored all eight of its runs in the second, third and fourth innings led by its six-run third. The barrage of scoring came via home runs from Kiley Naomi and Alysen Febrey and a series of walks from the OU pitching staff. Hayley Busby hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth that cut the lead to 10-8 before OU finished off the scoring with one more run in the fifth inning.
OU pitcher Nicole May was “the story of this weekend,” Gajewski said after the game. May pitched four innings for the Sooners, surrendering one run.
“We’re better for this series,” he added. “I know we lost two out of three so it’s disappointing. We had the Big 12 championship regular season in our grasp last night. Felt like we had it here today except for the one frame. We’ll be better on this. We’ll learn.”
OSU returns to action next weekend in the Big 12 Conference Tournament in Oklahoma City as the No. 2 seed. It will open postseason play with Texas before a tilt vs. Iowa State.
