It was a tough ending to Daton Fix’s Cowboy Wrestling career, but now he can somewhat run from his problems in a way.
Fix’s career at Oklahoma State ended with a 5-3 loss to Cornell’s Vito Arujau in the NCAA Wrestling Championships 133-pound final Saturday night in Kansas City, Missouri. It was the fourth finals loss for Fix. He finished with the 10th-most wins in Cowboy Wrestling history at 123-7. He’s also the first five-time All-American and five-time conference champion in OSU history.
Although Fix will never wear an orange singlet again, his wrestling career isn’t over yet. Fix will compete at the 2024 Olympic Team Trials on April 19-20 in College Station, Pennsylvania.
“Quick turnaround,” Fix said. “I’m looking forward to it. Not much time for a break. Gotta get better. And I can do that. There’s always room to get better and that’s what I’ve done for my whole career. Take a loss, it sucks, sometimes it sucks a little bit more than others, but you gotta get back up and go back to work.”
Fix was a world team member in 2019, winning silver at the 2019 World Championships in Oslo, Norway. He lost to Arujau in the semifinals of the 2020 Olympic Team Trials. Thomas Gilman ultimately beat Arujau in the finals to represent the United States at the Tokyo Olympic Games at 57 kg and won a bronze medal. Arujau won gold at the 2023 World Championships at 61 kg.
Although competing at 133 pounds his entire college career, Fix wrestles at 57 kilograms (125.6 pounds) for international competition. The next weight class for the Olympics is 65 kg, which is equivalent to 143.3 pounds. With the college wrestling season ending Saturday night, Fix has 26 days to cut about eight pounds while preparing for competition.
“Probably a lot of running [between end of season and trials],” Fix said. “Gotta get down to 125, so that’ll be fun. Just a lot of work. Gotta just clean up some things.”
So far, 16 wrestlers have qualified to compete in the Olympic Team Trials for the 57 kg spot. That includes Gilman and Arujau again. Former OSU wrestler Alex Dieringer will also participate in the event at 86 kg.
The 2024 Paris Olympic Games are scheduled for July 26-Aug. 11. Wrestling will start Aug. 5, ending with the final medal matches on Aug. 11.
