It is the eve of the final Oklahoma State football game of 2020, and I’m not sure I am any better equipped to pick how this zany team will perform than I was at the start of this truncated season.
Two-thirds of Pistols Firing’s editorial staff felt froggy and predicted a Bedlam win just before the Pokes got blown out in Norman. We all picked a somewhat tight one against Baylor before the Cowboys laid a 39-point road thumping on the Bears.
And here we go, prognosticating about a bowl game — sans several key players — against a Miami team we’re just now getting to know. Let’s see how this goes.
Kyle Cox
Prediction: Oklahoma State 35, Miami 31
Oklahoma State wins if the Cowboys let ‘er rip.
Bowl games that carry no consequence are the perfect opportunity to load up your kitchen sink and try to cram it in the overhead compartment. Let the mullet hang. I wanna see fake punts and Brennan Presley throw a TD to Tylan Wallace.
I most want to see (insert young player) get some extended reps in Orlando. I will go with Brennan Presley. We’ve seen flashes of his speed and playmaking ability, but he needs the reps. With the Cowboys losing plenty from the WR room, the more reps the better for the in-state gamer.
Marshall Scott
Prediction: Oklahoma State 32, Miami 27
Oklahoma State wins if it can contain D’Eriq King. King runs the show for Miami, and OSU has struggled with mobile quarterbacks in the past. OSU’s defensive linemen and linebackers are going to have to play disciplined, but if the Cowboys can contain him, they’ll win.
I most want to see (insert young player) get some extended reps in Orlando. I’ll hesitantly say Shane Illingworth. It might only be noise from the outside, but it looks as if their could be another OSU quarterback controversy this spring. I think OSU needs to know for sure what it has in Illingworth going into it a potential big decision for the 2021 team.
Kyle Boone
Prediction: Oklahoma State 28, Miami 24
Oklahoma State wins if its defense comes to play. That will entail a game-specific plan to limit D’Eriq King, the mobile Miami quarterback who can harm you with his legs and with his arm. OSU has struggled with rushing quarterbacks in the past, but we’ve yet to see what Jim Knowles can do with this defense given this much time to prepare. I suspect he will be prepared for the challenge.
I most want to see (insert young player) get some extended reps in Orlando. Give me all the Dominic Richardson reps. We saw what he could do with a full workload against Baylor, when he got 23 carries and turned it into 169 yards rushing and three scores. But I want to see what he can do against a better defense in Miami. With a strong showing, he could take the lead in the long offseason ahead for the battle to earn RB1 snap share in 2021.
