It could be a while before the Cowboys and Sooners lock horns again on the gridiron, but it won’t be that way for every sport.
The two schools will continue their rivalry on the wrestling mat because Oklahoma is staying on as a Big 12 affiliate in the sport. The perennial power softball teams are working on continuing to play. And the men’s hoops squads are also reportedly working out the details to keeping the rivalry going after the Sooners leave the Big 12 for the SEC.
Jon Rothstein had new OSU coach Steve Lutz on his podcast this week, where Lutz reportedly said the rivalry is on track to be played at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City in mid-December. Rothstein also reported that no contracts for the game have been signed yet, so this isn’t totally in stone.
Steve Lutz tells me that there are no contracts yet, but the annual “BEDLAM” game between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State is on track to be played at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City in mid-December.

It’s not completely new news, as former OSU coach Mike Boynton said ahead of Bedlam last season that he and OU coach Porter Moser had discussed the rivalry’s future. Boynton said he didn’t think the rivalry would be gone all that long, but it’s nice to see that concept has survived OSU’s coaching change.
Boynton was solid in the rivalry during his time as OSU’s coach, going 9-7 against the Sooners even despite an 0-2 final season. All-time, OSU is 106-143 against OU in men’s basketball.
The teams haven’t met in Oklahoma City since 2009. That game was a part of the Big 12 Tournament, and OSU won it 71-70. James Anderson hit a pair of free throws with 2.3 seconds to play to give the Cowboys the win. Anderson, Byron Eaton, Terrel Harris, Keiton Page and Obi Muonelo all scored in double figures that day. Blake Griffin had 17 for the Sooners.
Before that, the Cowboys and Sooners hadn’t played in OKC since 1942 — a game OSU won 44-35. In total, the two programs have met just three times in Oklahoma City with OU winning the other meeting in 1939.
If this is able to get set in stone for the upcoming season, OSU will be set to have an exciting nonconference slate in the first year under Lutz. Multiple reports surfaced last week that OSU will host former Cowboy point guard Doug Gottlieb and Green Bay to start the season.
