Doug Gottlieb will be coaching a Division-I basketball team on Eddie Sutton Court next season … but for the other team.
Oklahoma State will open the Steve Lutz era with a home game against former OSU point guard Doug Gottlieb as the Cowboys host Green Bay on Nov. 4, according to Jeff Goodman and Jon Rothstein.
Gottlieb hasn’t shied away from wanting the job at his alma mater the past three times it was open. Some of the OSU faithful have supported it while others pointed to his lack of coaching experience as a concern. Well, last month Gottlieb got to work on his resume by taking the job at Green Bay after the Phoenix had a late coaching vacancy when Sundance Wicks left for Wyoming.
The game could also feature Isaiah Miranda playing against his former team, a big man who played in three games for OSU this past season. He announced last week he was transferring to play for Gottlieb. It could also feature former OSU signee Jeremiah Johnson. Johnson, last month, requested his release from Oklahoma State. According to a report from 24/7 High School Hoops, Johnson is visiting Gottlieb and Green Bay on Wednesday. Johnson also visited Texas A&M since his release.
Gottlieb is OSU’s all-time leader in assists, dishing out 793 when playing under Eddie Sutton from 1997 to 2000. That tally came in just three years with the program and is 248 assists ahead of second-place Byron Eaton.
Gottlieb helped with last season’s OSU staff in a consultant role and also coached the Stillwater Stars, a team made of OSU alums, in TBT a few years back.
Meanwhile, OSU will be going through a transition from Mike Boynton to Lutz. Boynton was let go after a 12-20 season. Lutz is set to return just three players from that squad in Bryce Thompson, Jamyron Keller and Connor Dow, meaning Lutz has had to load up on transfer portal guys — bringing in seven to this point.
Whereas most early season basketball games don’t often have much in terms of storylines, the meeting between the Cowboys and Phoenix on Nov. 4 will certainly have OSU people talking.
