There will be yet another former Cowboy pitching in the MLB.
The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya reported Friday night that former Oklahoma State lefty Justin Wrobleski is expected to make his MLB debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
Wrobleski, 23, has sprinted through the minors since being drafted in the 11th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of OSU. He’s pitched only two games with the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers before getting the call to go to the bigs. He has spent most of this season with the Double-A Tulsa Drillers. He has a 3.23 ERA this season between 13 starts in Double-A and a pair of starts in Triple-A. He’s 5-3 and opposing batters have hit .239 against Wrobleski this season.
This was Wrobleski’s first season to reach Double-A. He spent all of last year in High-A, finishing 2023 with a 2.90 ERA and 4-4 record in 23 starts. He was named a High-A Midwest League All-Star and MiLB.com Organization All-Star after the season.
After less than three seasons with the Dodgers, Wrobleski has risen as the No. 14 prospect in the organization, according to MLB.com.
His scouting report on MLB.com says: “Wrobleski is the most polished of Los Angeles’ top lefty pitching prospects, a fact that overshadows the quality of his stuff. After working with a 90-93 mph fastball, he came back from elbow reconstruction with a 93-96 mph heater that reaches 98 with armside run and carry. He has impressive feel for spin, working with a solid mid-80s slider with two-plane depth that he can turn into either a low-80s curveball with more break or a tighter upper-80s cutter when he wants. His mid-80s changeup is a reliable third offering with fade and sink.”
Wrobleski’s only season in Stillwater was cut short because of an injury that ultimately required Tommy John surgery two months before the draft and hurt his draft stock, along with an issue of walking batters. He had a 4.20 ERA and 3-2 record with 50 strikeouts compared to 26 walks as a junior in 2021.
Out of Sequoyah High School in Canton, Georgia, Wrobleski started his college career at Clemson, where he was for only a year before spending a shortened season at State College of Florida in 2020. He was also drafted out of high school by the Seattle Mariners in the 36th round.
The Dodgers host the Milwaukee Brewers at 3:10 p.m. (CT) Sunday. Wrobleski is scheduled to face-off against Oklahoma native Dallas Keuchel if the pitching probables stay true. The Dodgers are in desperate need of pitching help right now after several injuries throughout the staff. Those injuries led to Wrobleski getting called up earlier than expected for a spot start.
