On Monday night, Kenny Gajewski sent a simple message in his team’s group chat: the word Bedlam and its definition.
Oklahoma State hosts No. 1 Oklahoma this weekend in a three-game series that will determine the Big 12 champion.
Gajewski, OSU’s softball coach, said he is going to take a different strategy in his messaging about Bedlam this season because what he has done in the past hasn’t worked. OSU is 0-14 against OU under Gajewski.
In his defense, not a lot has worked for any team against the Sooners lately. OU is 40-1 this season and 292-33 overall since Gajewski took over in Stillwater in 2016.
In the past, Gajewski said the messaging has been that the Cowgirls need to take their softball to the other team, regardless of what jersey they are wearing. This year, though, things will be different.
“I thought a lot about this, this last week since Sunday on the ride home, what the messaging is gonna be,” Gajewski said Wednesday. “I’ve talked to some different people around here, kind of sought out some different opinions and thoughts.
“I am going to make it a big deal because it is a big deal. And not just the fact that we’re playing for a Big 12 championship, but it’s a big deal because of what these girls have done. They put themselves in this spot.”
The Cowgirls are 39-6 this year and 14-1 in conference play. The Sooners are 14-0 in league play, meaning whichever of these teams takes two of three this weekend will capture the Big 12 crown.
The Sooners have won the league eight consecutive times.
“They’ve got something that we want, and we got to go get it,” Gajewski said. “We got to come out swinging and punching and get up when you get hit. I think both teams are gonna get punched here. The team that can get back up and get back to what they do is the message.”
