TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — They didn’t have to pay anything to hunt and fish, and now they certainly won’t be forking over any cash to the State of Oklahoma in the near future. Monday, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. signed an executive order allowing members of the Cherokee Nation to hunt and fish on tribal lands for free as long as they could show a membership card or tribe issued photo ID. The tribe with the Choctaw Nation had been paying the state a discounted rate for hunting licenses since 2016, but now Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt said he would not renew the agreement under its current terms.
