CLINTON, Okla. – School officials in Clinton are investigating after a Native American fifth grader reported being held down by two other students who cut his hair. Superintendent Tyler Bridges told Oklahoma City television station KWTV the district is investigating fully. The family of Dominique Lonebear, a Cheyenne & Arapaho tribal member, says the assault happened Tuesday at Washington Elementary School in Clinton. The boy’s grandmother, Laquita Lonebear, says her grandson couldn’t identify the students because he was held face down while a student cut off several inches of his hair. Long hair among Native American men often has cultural and religious significance.
