1522 - Ferdinand Magellan’s Spanish expedition to be the first to circumnavigate the world was successfully completed with their return to Spain, however, without Magellan who was killed in battle
1620 - The Mayflower departs Plymouth, England with 102 Pilgrims and about 30 crew members for the New World
1866 - Frederick Douglass is 1st US black delegate to a national convention (pictured)
1901 - US President McKinley is shot while visiting the Pan-American Exposition in NY
1909 - NY Times announces American explorer Robert Peary had discovered the North Pole 5 months earlier
1916 - 1st true supermarket, the “Piggly Wiggly” is opened in Memphis, TN
2018 - NY and NJ state attorneys launch investigations into sexual abuse by the Catholic Clergy; brings to 6 the number of states investigating
