1558 - Elizabeth I, aged 25, ascends the English throne upon death of her half sister, Queen “Bloody” Mary
1800 - Congress holds its 1st session in Washington DC in an incomplete Capital building
1855 - David Livingstone is 1st European to see Victoria Falls in what is now Zambia and Zimbabwe (pictured)
1869 - Suez Canal in Egypt opens, linking Mediterranean and Red Seas
1970 - Douglas Engelbart receives patent for 1st computer mouse
1973 - US President Nixon tells AP “people have got to know whether or not their president is a crook, well, I’m not a crook”
1996 - 1st fossils of 2.5 million year old Australopithecus Garhi, an ancestor on the human family tree, are found in Middle Muash, Ethiopia
